Preemie Smiling Just Days After Birth.
This Viral Photo of a Preemie Smiling Just Days After Birth Is the Cutest Thing Ever.
She may have been born early, but now she's really feeling the joie de vivre.
Lots of people say that when babies smile, it's just their bodies passing gas. Okay. Now look at this photo of Freya Vinje, smiling just five days after being born prematurely. We're not so convinced gas caused such an infectious grin...
The fact that Freya was smiling at all is a testament to the little one's sheer optimism — her journey into the world wasn't easy.
After only 28 weeks in utero, her mother, Lauren Vinje, started showing signs of preeclampsia, a pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure. "With preeclampsia, your body sees the placenta as being a foreign object and it's almost like your body becomes allergic to it," Vinje told ABC News. After a doctor's visit, Lauren was told that her baby's heart rate was dropping — and that she'd have to deliver the baby way ahead of schedule.
Two days later, on Thanksgiving Day 2014, Freya was born via an emergency C-section. She weighed 4 pounds, 4 ounces. "I didn't get to hold her until she was bout 5 hours old," Vinje said, because doctors were worried that her lungs were underdeveloped. She was whisked away to the NICU, where she remained under close supervision for the next month.
Just a few days after Freya's early birth, Vinje was casually chatting with her baby girl when something extraordinary happened. "I said, 'Should we send a picture to Daddy?' and right when I was about to take the picture, she had this huge smile," said Vinje.
Lauren and her husband David Vinje shared the photo with the blog “Birth Without Fear”, where it soon went viral. It's been shared countless times and is being covered by multiple major news outlets. The Vinjes said they shared it to encourage other parents who are going through similar experiences.
Freya's story is now inspiring parents of preemies everywhere. In her birth story on “Birth Without Fear”, Lauren beautifully sums up bringing Freya into the world: "There were so many things I thought were going 'wrong' in the moment they were happening. Looking back, it all went perfectly." And that smile? It's just as beautiful as ever.
