Anna Julia Cooper was the daughter of a slave and slaveholder. She was an educator (teacher, principle, and university president), foster mother, adoptive mothe...r, suffragist, and civil rights activist. Cooper's doctoral thesis made her the fourth African American woman to earn a Ph.D. Her husband, a pastor, died when she was very young and she was laid to rest alongside him after she passed almost a century later.1858-1964
